NELSON BREAKS NATIONAL AND EUROPEAN RECORDS

Birmingham Games, Birmingham NIA, Sunday 23rd February 2003

Report by Tom Gayle

2002 English Schools 100m champion Alex Nelson showed that there was no chance of him easing off from last years success by breaking the British and European age 14 best, when clocking 6.98 for 60m at the meeting.

In only his second indoor competition ever, let alone the winter, Nelson showed no inexperience over the surface by beating a high quality field which included National U17 Silver Medallist Andrew Watkins (Cwmbran Harriers) and Ryan Scott (Yate) who was 4th in the same race and reigning Midland indoor 60m and 200m champion.

Nelson who isn’t 15 until next month sent an emphatic message out to his opposition that he won’t settle for a supporting role this season when in the new U17 age group record and looks set for big things this summer.

Steve Lewis continued his extremely consistent indoor campaign by also moving his name up the UK all time lists. He was a class above the opposition and won by 75cm with a new personal best of 4.85 to move up to 10th on the Junior Men's all time list.

Only beaten once this indoor campaign, Lewis has shown the form that will no doubt like Nelson, see him challenging for those major honours outdoor this summer, and possibly a place in the Great Britain European Junior team.

The middle distance provided the main highlights for the club's women as Vicky Owen ran the race of her life when clocking a huge personal best of 2.10.33 in the 800m whilst Suzanne Owen won the 3000m and took second in the 1500m in 4.32.36.
