Priceless Performance
by Tom Gayle
Young Elliot Price finally got the rich rewards his season long consistency
deserves by taking gold in the U15 boys discus. Returning to the venue where
he claimed silver at the English Schools Championships in July, Price
exploited the chance to gain revenge over Matthew Townsend (Windsor, Slough,
Eton & Hounslow) who was aiming to complete the English Schools and
National AAA double.
Price set his stall out from the off as his
opening effort of 45.62m was the gold medal benchmark for the whole of the
competition. Despite not being able to improve with his remaining attempts,
the opposition led by Welsh athlete Matthew Evans (Carmarthan) were half a
metre adrift, while Townsend had to settle for bronze.
Pole vaulters Andrew Marsh and Alex Williams
were looking to maintain their performances from the English Schools as they
too were looking to complete the double. Unfortunately Williams was wasn’t
at his best and wound up a disappointing eighth.
Marsh, defeated only once all season he
unfortunately had to succumb to the athlete who inflicted that defeat back in
June at the Masons Trophy, Steven Lewis. The Liverpool Harrier who could only
manage eighth and last at the English Schools denied Marsh the double by
clearing 3.30m to Marsh’s 3.25m to take victory.
With Marsh sitting at the top of the UK
rankings, victory was probably expected, but defeat was hardly a failure. For
some one who has only been vaulting for just over 12 months, he adds AAA
silver to his Schools and National Indoor title, all of which he is eligible
to contest again next year.
Jazmine Rowe completed the full set of medals
as she took Bronze in the U15 girls 100m. Rowe who was just outside the medals
over the 200m at the English Schools joined fellow club member Rachael Redmond
at equal 30th on the UK all time lists clocking 12.21 behind winner
Joey Duck (Milton Keynes) and Viki Shier (Blackpool & Flyde).
Rowe who was last year’s top U13 sprinter has
shown no fear entering the new age group and has shown the form that suggests
she could dominate the UK sprinting scene in this category next year.
For Martin Chomanicz it was simply a case of
accepting he was beaten by international athletes, but this was made much
harder by the fact that, he was as in the English Schools was just inches away
from a medal, placing fourth.
Chomanicz who prepared for the championships be
revising his personal best for the 100 and 200m on the previous Tuesday by
running 10.86 and 22.07, the latter was a new club record.
An impressive 10.90 in the opening round ear
marked him for medal contention but the line up was impressive, boasting three
Great Britain internationals in the shape of World Youth 100m bronze medallist
Craig Pickering (Milton Keynes), European 100/200m Champion Wade Bennett
Jackson (Belgrave) and Andrew Watkins (Cwmbran) who was seventh over 200m at
the World Youth Championships.
In the end Pickering took a comfortable victory
(10.7) from Jackson (10.8) with Chomanicz cursing a poor start as Watkins just
snatched the Bronze. Hopefully though Chomanicz, who to be fair has been in
the shadow of his illustrious team mate Alex Nelson, who missed the
championships through injury, will be delighted with a incredible break
through season. Under Chris Brackstone’s careful eye he has radically
revised personal bests to enable him to compete with such quality opposition.
