30th August 2003  BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE DIVISION 3 - SOUTHAMPTON

The team that took part in the match at Southampton all performed to their best, and because of this, the Club finished the season in 6th place and thus avoided relegation. Morris Fox was at his usual best, winning the shot and coming 3rd in the discus. David Brackstone acieved a 2nd and a 3rd, Paul Nwaolise ran well again in the sprints, as did Steve Butler.

It was great to see Andrew Corey on the track for the first time in 2 years, he posted a good time in the 400m despite being under ther weather. Danny Thompson continued to show his versatility by competeing in the 400mHurdles and the 400m. Andy Prophett showed his best in the 800m and Steven Heathcote displayed his usual team spirit by willingly running both 800m and 1500m. He is the type of athlete that future teams should be built around.

The same can be said of John Danahay, Peter Benyon and Adrian Thiemicke, who, despite being nowhere near match fit, were prepared to give all they could for the club. Absent athletes should take note! It was in the field that we generally performed to our best with Dominic Shepherd, Roger Skedd, Robin Smith, Neil Fairlamb, Ashley Steventon and Rob Eggleton all backing up Morris in his efforts.

There was also a welcome return from Chris Harvey, who showed real spirit in slotting into the gap left by David Mountford. Nik Gayle also showed his talent again in the 110m Hurdles. The Club needs its strongest men's team to be constantly available, or needs to decide who really wants to compete for the club and stick with those.
