18th October 2003 NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE - WYE ROAD

By packing 3 in the first 4 in the Senior Men's race City of Stoke won the first fixture of the season in the North Staffs League. The course was even drier than last year. A fairly steady start enabled Dave Hollins (Trentham) to put the screws on early (for him) and quickly get away from the rest of the field together with Steve Watson of Buxton. Chris Minor, Andy Allen, Steve Heathcote and I stayed in a chasing pack of 7. Into the second lap I started to reel in Watson but Hollins was gone. Andy Allen pulled through very quickly to overtake me at the beginning of the 3rd lap and pull us away from the other chasers as I tucked in waiting for the infamous Wye Road hill to come around again. Chris Minor also was not far behind but with my last lap effort I got away from Andy who had missed some weeks of training through injury. Thanks to steady runs by Ian Milner and Gavin Walters the team ended up with 75 points to head Trentham by 9.

Alex Hall in the U17 Youths and D Johnson in the U11 girls were our only individual winners on the day but the U13 girls and the U15 boys also completed team victories.
