6th December 2003 NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE - LEEK

Somehow we salvaged a Senior Men's Division 1 League title on the revised and even more hilly course at Westwood, Leek. Those who ran can rightly be proud of their efforts despite a second place behind Trentham on the day.

Steve Heathcote ran easily his best race as a senior to come in a great 4th, just out-kicking Andy Allen who was as surprised as I was to see Steve so competitive. Andy had the consolation of 2nd individual place in the league. I got round in 8th, but did not feel comfortable at all - is that age creeping up on me again? - not when I can see Trentham's M45 Dave Hollins still so far in front! I was 3rd overall in the league individual and first M40. 3 in 8 was the foundation for a fine performance on the day, supported by Gavin Walters in 21st with Paul Hodgkinson, Adrian Thiemicke and Ian Milner in the late 20s. Special mention should be made of Newcastle under Lyme schoolboy Jamie Rowley, actually a Stoke AC runner in disguise, who dominated the Junior title with a fantastic 14th overall in this race - at the age of 17!

Other highlights included a superb 'easy' win by Alex Derricott in the U15 boys and a great 2nd by Liam Jones-Mansueto, and 3rd and overall league title by Alex Hall in the U17 men. The U15 boys and U13 and U11 Girls also won team titles.
