With seven athletes missing from the original
line up, this meeting was always going to be a struggle. However, every
cloud has a silver lining and in this case it was ‘new boy’ Merv
Richards. Merv originally turned up to ‘guest’ in the throwing events
but demonstrated what a superb all-round athlete he is by winning the shot,
second in the 200m (ran in trainers) and third in the discus.
The ever-reliable Richard Barrington was in
superb form again winning the M50 200m.
Mick Warrilow had to compete out of his age
group but still put in an excellent performance gaining valuable points in
the M40 100m and M40 Long Jump.
Dave Hindley had a busy night competing in
three events and despite not being fully fit he finished a creditable 3rd
in the M60 800m.
Phil Bailey is improving with every
competition and showed what a competitive athlete he is by winning the M50
2000m walk with a personal best time of 13.28.7.
Overall this was a good performance.
Considering that we only competed in one of the five middle distance races,
the team did exceptionally well to finish in joint fourth position only two
points behind third place. If we can turn out sufficient athletes for the
next meeting at Sutton Coldfield we will still be aiming to finish at the
top end of the division.

British Masters Derby 7th
–8th June
Clive Howell and Richard Barrington competed
against the best of British Veteran Athletes at the Moorways stadium in
Derby. Clive once again showed what an excellent hammer thrower he is with
his best throw of 34.58m placing him 3rd in the M45 competition.
Richard Barrington was in top form to win the
Gold Medal in the M55 400m Hurdles in a time 69.63.
Richard was still feeling tired after his
efforts but still managed to qualify for the M55 400m Final.
Midland Veterans
Championship Solihull 22nd June
On a very hot humid day, Stoke had 3 athletes
competing in the Midlands Championships. Richard Barrington achieved a Gold
Medal winning double in the M55 200m (27.5) and 400m (62.2). Peter
Wainwright won the Gold Medal in the M50 Javelin with a throw of 36.92.
Clive Howell’s consistent throwing won him the Gold Medal in the M45
Hammer with a throw of 34.49.
These are very well run competitions and it
would be good to see a larger Stoke contingent at next year’s meetings.
