2nd July 2003  MIDLAND VETS TRACK & FIELD LEAGUE - SUTTON COLDFIELD

For the first time this season we managed to fill all the events and the reward was a thoroughly deserved team victory at a venue where previously we have always struggled. This was entirely down to commitment and more than a few excellent individual performances.

Paul Williams still not fully recovered from injury ran a controlled race to finish 2nd in the M40A 100m. Merv Richards ran well in his new spikes to finish 2nd in the M40B 100m.

Richard Barrington found himself in an exceptionally tough race but competed extremely well to finish 3rd in the M50 100m. Richard then competed out of his age group in the M40A 400m finishing in a credible 5th position.

Alan Burt was another athlete not recovered from injury but still prepared to compete for the team. Alan won valuable points in both the M40B 400m and the M40B 1500m.

John Danahay is now recovered from a virus and is getting back to full fitness. On the night he had a comfortable win in the M40A 1500m and looked like he could have carried on for a few more laps at the same pace.

Phil Bailey was again in superb form to finish 4th in the M40A 2000m walk with yet another personal best time of 13.15.9s.

Dave Hindley showed his versatility to finish 4th in the M60 400m and 5th in the M60 discus.

Clive Howell was as consistent as ever with a good series of throws to finish 2nd in the M40 Hammer.

Merv Richards did well to finish 5th on his debut in the M40 High Jump but showed where his true strength is by winning the M40 discus.

Mick Warrilow improves with every meeting producing another personal best of 1.60m to equal the Midlands record and win the M50 High Jump and then hurried over to the M40 Triple Jump to finish in a superb 2nd position.

This was an excellent team performance where every athlete played his part. We are now in a good position to win this division. We need to turn out a full team for the final meeting at Cannock and hope that the other clubs finish to current form.
