7th May 2003  MIDLAND VETS TRACK & FIELD LEAGUE - TELFORD

After a dismal 2002 season, a revitalised Stoke team were looking forward in anticipation to the first meeting.

Paul Williams got us off to a flying start in the M40 100 metres with a winning time of 11.4s and then completed the double winning the M40 400m. Richard Barrington once again showed what a fine athlete he is with an emphatic win in the M50 400m. Alan Burt made his track debut and competed extremely well earning valuable points for the team.

Dick Kneill and Dave Hindley, recently elevated to the M60 age group, both competed well in their events and Phil Bailey showed once again what a competitive race walker he is. Clive Howell is a very capable hammer thrower but was extremely unlucky on the night with two foul throws that were in excess of 30 metres.

John Danahay put in a very brave performance in the 1500 metres. Despite feeling unwell, he still offered to compete and finished in second place. Mick Warrilow is now benefiting from the coaching of Phil Lawton, and produced a p.b. of 1.55m in the M40 high jump and then followed that up with a win in the M50 triple jump.

The final event of the night was the 4x200m relay. Cannock and Stafford stormed into the lead leaving everyone else trailing but the combined efforts of Alan Burt, Mick Warrilow and Richard Barrington pulled Stoke back into 3rd position. At the final changeover, Cannock appeared to have an unassailable lead of well over 30 metres. Paul Williams took the challenge, hurtling round the bend and in a breathtaking finish he powered home to give Stoke an unbelievable win.

This was a tremendous way to finish the evening where the team not only showed the talent within the club but also demonstrated that individual commitment can earn valuable points.

Stoke narrowly finished second on the night to a strong Tamworth team but this was a victory for all involved.

We look forward to the next meeting at Burton on Thursday 12th June.
