Ray 1st at last!
After a great battle with defending champion and fellow City of Stoke AC
runner Mike Proudlove, Ray Plant finally won the local marathon title he has
sought for so many years.
Locked together for close on 24 miles the two protagonists knew it would
come down to who blinked first. Mike started to suffer from cramp at the
point where he powered away last year and like all great road racers Ray
made the most of the opportunity to stride away to a comfortable victory in
one of the faster times in the last few years on this difficult course.
Both athletes had been through a difficult year, with injury and illness
affecting their performances and it was great to see them so competitive
again. I'm certain that with a more competitive field around them they would
have run faster and I suspect that both will have excellent results in the
next few months once they have recovered from today's efforts.
