Marathon boys shine during speed work
Report by Tom Gayle
City of Stoke AC were out in force in what is
regarded as the one of the best 5 mile road races in the country. The
appealing flat tour of Alsager helped draw some of the country's best road
runners such as Great Britain internationals Chris Davies (Telford), Ben
Noad (Bristol), Dave Anderson (Belgrave) and promising local junior Tom
Humphries (Cannock & Staffs) all in search of the £250 first prize.
Despite changes to a course that has created a huge depth of fast times,
this tradition was continued as the first 20 finishers all went under 25
minutes. The club was lead home by double Potteries Marathon Champion Mike
Proudlove who showed no fear in such distinguished company to clock an
impressive 24.31, which backed up by good runs from fellow marathon runners
Ray Plant and Andy Allen resulted in a highly credible fourth place in the
team event.
