Gateshead Gold completes the set for
Brackstone
Report by Tom Gayle
After collecting Bronze over the 400m hurdles in 2002, and Silver in the
400m flat last year, Loughborough student David Brackstone finally struck
gold at the British University Championships by scooping the 400m hurdles
title.
After the heats it was clear that the main
protagonist that stood between Brackstone and the title was the 2002
champion Steve Surety (Brunel WL) as both comfortably won their respective
heats.
As expected from the off in the final
Brackstone and Surety were the first to rise at the opening hurdles during
the early stages of the race.
With still little between them coming into
the home straight, Surety made his push for gold. After establishing a
slight but significant lead during the last quarter of the race, Surety
seemed to be stretching out to collect his second title BUSA title.
Fortunately for Brackstone, Surety had ran his race too early as the Brunel
star’s form began to drastically deteriorate while approaching the final
hurdle, which he subsequently clattered. During a dramatic close to the race
Brackstone kept his head and successfully tackled the last hurdle, enabling
him to snatch the crown and complete a full set of BUSA medals.
