30-31st May 2004 INTER COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIPS - BEDFORD

Lewis and Brackstone scoop top Inter Counties Honours

Report by Tom Gayle

Steven Lewis and David Brackstone both struck gold over the bank holiday weekend at the annual British Inter Counties championship held in a blustery Bedford.

18 year old Lewis added his first senior title to his endless list of junior accolades following a tight battle with his Staffordshire team mate Chris Tremayne. Despite windy conditions Lewis was able to take the title winning a jump off with a vault of 4.95. The next time Lewis returns to Bedford he will be focusing his attentions on securing selection for Great Britain World Junior Championship team at the National U20 AAA’s at the end of June.

For Brackstone it was the second major title of the month as he added the Inter Counties 400m hurdles title to the British Universities crown he won right at the beginning of the month. Fortunately there was not a repeat of the gripping drama Brackstone experienced at the BUSA championships as he was simply too good for the opposition taking the tile in 52.43, with his nearest rival well adrift.

It was not all Stoke AC celebrations though as red hot favourite for the women’s 100m crown Amanda Forrester was reduced to a spectator’s role in final. After posting the two fastest times of the competition in her heat and semi final she was clearly the hot favourite to scoop the crown.

When the final came, the usually slow starting Forrester soared out of her blocks, unfortunately though her reactions were just two quick for her body to handle and within metres was forced to pull up with a suspected strain. For what is possibly the clubs strongest hope for a Athens representative this summer it was a cruel way to end the weekend watching her rivals fight it out as she jogged and walked the remainder of the race, but hopefully the physical damage was not too great and she will be again a major force to contend with come the Olympic trials in July.
