12-13th June 2004 NATIONAL AND MIDLANDS MULTI-EVENT CHAMPS - NORTHWOOD

Phenomenal return to action secures international call up for Davidson

Report by Tom Gayle

Wendy Davidson finally put her injury nightmare behind her as she produced an emphatic return to competition at the AAA’s and Midland AAA’s Combined events championship held on the clubs home turf at Northwood.

After a prolonged lay off due to a foot injury sustained at the same event 12 months previous, a setback so sever that it required her to go under the surgeons knife, the Anthony Brannen coached athlete produced an emphatic return to action by picking up National heptathlon silver and Midland gold.

Despite the injury severely restricting her training, her true talent prevailed at the weekend as she was able to record three individual personal bests and a new overall lifetime best score of 5093, which takes her to 64th on the U.K All time list.

In addition to the medals she claimed, and added bonus saw here subsequently selected to represent Great Britain at the U23 combined Events international against France at the end of July, while Further success came as Victoria Consterdine ensured that it was a Stoke one two in the Midland championship, whilst placing fifth overall.

In the men’s decathlon, another of Brannen’s protégés Sam Bishop had a dream competition as he was able to produce a inspired six personal bests, most notably a three meter improvement in his javelin. This helped Bishop add just over 800 points to his previous decathlon best, and as a result of this he was able to place fifth in the AAA competition, and claim Midland silver.

Both Robin Smith and Rodger Skedd entered the competition with high hopes of impressing the Great Britain selectors and join Davidson in Great Britain U23 team. Despite a promising start that saw both record new personal best in the 100m, sadly both had their hopes dashed as both were forced to retire. Smith’s challenge ended after a no height in the high jump, while Skedd succumbed after DNF in the hurdles.

Finally the youngest member of Brannen’s entourage 18 year old James Dohnal grabbed his share of the limelight by collecting Midland Gold. His performance, which included three personal bests on the way to a new decathlon best tally of 6057 points. Dohnal will now focus his attentions on preparing for the English Schools combined events competition in September, for which he is a serious contender for the crown.
