This was not quite the start to the season that
I was expecting. The unavailability and injuries to athletes on the night
meant that it was going to be a struggle to maintain last season’s form.
The evening could not have started worse when
Merv Richards suffered an Achilles injury in the first event. We all wish
Merv a speedy recovery.
Mick Warrilow soon put the team back on track
with an emphatic win in the M50 100m. He followed that up with 3rd
in the M40 high jump and another win in the M50 triple jump.
Brian Eggleton made his league debut and
competed well in the M60 100m and M60 shot. Brian will be a useful member of
the team this year.
Phil Bailey was also unlucky with injury but
Dave Hindley had a superb race finishing second in the M60 2k walk.
Clive Howell threw well in the hammer for
second place and also competed well in the javelin.
John Danahay put in another brave
performance. He had been unable to train through illness put competed in the
1500m to finish 3rd.
Two exceptional performances came from middle
distance runners Alan Burt and Ray Ibbs. They both agreed at short notice to
run the 400m and then ran fine races in the M40 and M50 1500m.
On reflection it was a good team performance
with everyone willing to compete in whatever was asked. It was disappointing
to finish so close to 2nd place. I still have not learned from
last season that every point counts! Royal Sutton Coldfield had a very
strong team and were worthy winners on the night, but if we can get all of
our athletes out at Telford we will certainly give them a good competition.
