25th June 2005  BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE - HENDON

Report by Andy Prophett

A small team of just 14 athletes made the long journey to Hendon for the third league fixture of the season. It was testimony to the team spirit and commitment of those present that the team battled hard to gain 7th spot on the day.

With many absent field eventers, AAA decathlon bronze medalist Roger Skedd had a busy afternoon competing in the maximum permitted 7 events and scored a mammoth 59 points. His best performances were 2nd in the A long with 6.96m and 4th in the 110m hurdles in 15.0 seconds. Nick Gayle then matched Roger’s time as he took the B event and claimed the club’s only victory of the afternoon.

Intra club rivalry is leading to good performances in the throws. Roger improved on his distances from the last match to regain the A string from Greg Nixon in both the Shot and Discus. Greg also improved his Shot to 12.49m, his best league performance this season, to claim 2nd in the B event. The consistent Rob Eggleton also gained his best position of the season, throwing 50.83m for fourth in the A Javelin.

The steeplechase was again a good source of points for the club. Steve Bazell came 4th in the A event with a season’s best, whilst a tired Gavin Walters was 4th in the B event. Gavin exemplified the spirit in the team by participating in 4 events before the steeplechase, which undoubtedly affected his performance in his specialist event. The 5000m also saw pleasing performances from Alex Hall and Pete Benyon. Alex, a first year junior, stayed with the lead pack in the early stages and recorded a new pb of 15:25.6, whilst Pete clocked 15:53.3 his fastest time for over three years.

Competition in this division is fierce with small margins covering several places. Craig Ellams again threw over 56m in the hammer, but found himself in 5th place just 69cm short of third. Andy Prophett came 6th in a tactical 800m A race, but paid for his poor tactics as he was just 0.6 seconds behind second place. Andy was so annoyed that he returned to the track later for a rare outing over 1500m, before taking on Darren Campbell on the anchor leg of 4x100m relay. However, Rob Spencer showed exactly how to win a close battle as he dug deep to take 2 places in the closing stretches of the 800m B event.

The final fixture of the season takes place at Stoke on July 30th.
