INTER-COUNTIES CROSS COUNTRY - NOTTINGHAM |

Katie Holt first Stoke runner home in the Inter-Counties
There is no more competitive endurance running event in the UK Calendar than
the Inter-counties at Woollaton Park. A host of Stoke AC athletes
representing Staffordshire (and other Counties) performed with distinction
and sleet, snow and strong winds did little to dampen their enthusiasm.
Katie Holt, Stoke AC's newest cross country starlet zipped round to a superb
9th overall in the U13 girls race, and was very close to the leaders at the
end considering the pace at the front.
In the U13 boys Jake Hart confirmed his local standing as the first
Staffordshire runner home, followed not far behind by Lee Migliaccio and Sam
Hart. Elsewhere, perhaps the best performance was by Alex Hall in the U17
men, maybe a little disappointed to be slightly down on his superb
performance in the National, but still showing a big improvement on last
year's 51st.
In the Senior men Tom Gayle ran a superbly controlled race to finish in the
top 80, and beat local cross country 'master' Dave Hollins for the first
time.
At the front of the race former Stoke AC athlete Rob Whalley failed by one
second to get into the men's team for the World Cross Country championships.
(Just behind him it was great to watch Cannock and Stafford's youngster Tom
Humphries battle superbly with his more experienced rivals for 7th place
overall).
In the U20 women Aimee Simcox ran a massive race to finish 36th with great
performances also from Sophie Alcock and Ruth Barry reflecting coach
Alan Morris' squad's excellent preparation this winter. Former Stoke AC
athlete Suzanne Benyon ran a superb race to finish 35th in a very
competitive senior women's race.
Finally a special mention should be made of Carl Shubotham in the U20 men.
Having watched Carl trudge wearily around close to the back of the National
two weeks previously it was brilliant to see him pick himself up, run
strongly here and finish 4th counter for Staffordshire. That not only takes
talent, but a lot of guts - and bodes well for his future progression in this
event.
