6th May 2006  BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE - LIVERPOOL

A depleted Stoke AC team travelled to Liverpool and found the going tough in the opening fixture of the year. Windy conditions didn’t help times and distances, but there were pleasing individual performances on a day that was generally a disappointing start to life in the rebranded National League 2, formerly known as Division 3.

A good early points haul was achieved in the Long Jump with Dave Mountford and Sam Bishop battling against each other in the club’s most successful event of the day. Mountford’s 6.87m gained 3rd place in the A competition, with Bishop just 1cm behind to claim victory in the B event. Decathlete Bishop was later to combine with fellow multi-eventer Robin Smith to achieve good points in the high jump, both athletes jumping 1.85m, with Bishop placing 4th A and Smith 2nd B.

Last season’s top scorer Roger Skedd had a typically busy afternoon, starting off with 4.00m for 4th in the A Pole Vault, before concluding by pipping team mate Rob Eggleton in the javelin. Skedd’s final throw of 54.28m gave him 5th in the A event, with Eggleton’s 53.91m placing 2nd in the B string. Greg Nixon also gained a 2nd place in the B shot with a distance of 12.18m.

The most successful track event of the afternoon was the 110m hurdles. In the A event, Nick Gayle started well and was leading for most of the race, before slipping to 3rd place to match his position at last weekends BUSA champs. Alaistair Candlish followed this up by taking 4th in the B event. An improved turnout is required at the next fixture at Swansea on June 3rd if the club is to pull itself up the table and away from the relegation zone.
