Report by Andy Prophett
A Stoke team deprived of all of its multi-event squad, battled hard to
finish a credible sixth on the day. This moved the club from last place
after the opening fixture to just outside the relegation zone at the midway
point of the season.
Alex Nelson made a welcome return to the team
and provided the only A string victory of the day in the 100m. However, last
weekends inter-counties 200m champion crossed the line clutching his
hamstring, forcing him out of the rest of the meeting, but hopefully not
affecting the rest of his season.
Inter-counties 800m bronze medallist Tom
Gayle also followed his success of last weekend with a good display. Despite
being badly boxed for much of the race, Gayle managed to find a way through
on the inside to edge out former Olympic finalist Curtis Robb for second
place, finishing just 0.14 seconds behind Swansea’s Chris Gowell.
The 110m hurdles was again the club’s most
successful event on the track. In the A event, Nick Gayle improved from
third place at the last fixture to match the second place of elder brother
Tom. This was then followed by Alistair Candlish, who capitalised on an
excellent start to finish second in the B event. The steeplechase pairing of
Gavin Walters and Steve Bazell also scored well by finishing 4th
A and 3rd B respectively.
Gregg Nixon combined with Martin Bartholomew
to score well in both the Discus and Shot. Nixon’s 42.53m in the discus
placed him 3rd in the A event, whilst 41.58m gave Bartholomew victory in the
B competition. The two athletes then had an even closer battle in the Shot,
with Bartholomew finishing 5th A with 12.57m, just 5cm ahead of Nixon’s
12.52m which comfortably won the B event.
Further success in the throws came when Rob
Eggleton produced one of his best performances to date to place 3rd in the
Javelin with 57.42m. The Long Jump was the most successful of the jumps,
with Dave Mountford placing 4th in the A string and Chris Harvey finishing
3rd in the B event.
The league table suggests that Stoke, Crawley
and Herne Hill will be battling to avoid the two relegation spots at the end
of the season. With all three teams level on league points the value of
every match point is vital. It is hoped that a stronger team will be
available for the crucial fixture on 1st July.
