1st July 2006  BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE MATCH 3 - KINGSTON

Report by Andy Prophett

A battling performance in Kingston in temperatures more akin to Kingston, Jamaica saw Stoke finish seventh on the day, but drop to the foot of the league with just one fixture remaining.

With no A string victories in the match, Nick Gayle and Alex Nelson were the most successful Stoke athletes with their second places. The 110m hurdles was again the club’s most successful event, with Gayle equalling his second place of the last match and Alistair Candlish gaining 3rd place in the B event. Nelson, competing in the 200m, suffered a rare defeat at this level, but gained valuable points for the team.

In the middle distance events, Tom Gayle continues to have a good season and again doubled up effectively to finish 3rd in the A 800m in 1:52.48 and 4th in the 1500m in 3:53.33.  The 1500m also saw junior Carl Shubotham achieve a pb as he finished fourth in the B event.  Elsewhere on the track, there were also PBs for new signing Chris Perry in the 400m hurdles and first year junior Damian Gallagher in the 5000m, whilst Steve Bazell gained 3rd place in the B steeplechase.

Decathlete Sam Bishop had a typically busy afternoon and was the team’s top points with 27 points from his 4 individual events. His best return came from a 4th place in the A shot, which was backed up by a 2nd place from Gregg Nixon in the B event.  Nixon also took 3rd spot in the B discus, whilst Rob Eggleton took 4th place in the A javelin. Chris Harvey and James Dohnal both had busy afternoons, working hard for the team and competing in 4 events each, with Dohnal registering a new PB in the triple jump.

The final fixture of the season takes place at Crawley on August 5th and a strong turnout is essential if the team is to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

PS Andy Prophett is too modest to mention that he showed an excellent return to form himself with a fine tactical run in the 800m B race... Sub 1.55 in the next race Andy?
