Yet again injuries and late withdrawals reduced the
City AC men's team to a shadow of their current potential in this league.
Team manager Steve Shubotham knows the team will finish higher once the
missing guys are running, but in the circumstances the reduced strength of
the team was the least of all our concerns on this particular day...
In any case 17 year old Damian Gallagher proved that his North Staffs League
performance was no flash in the pan with a great effort in a very strong
field. Close behind, Andy Allen proved that hitting 40 is also a recipe for
rejuvenation. Steve Bazell and Gavin Walters showed solid form but we know
how much better they can go. Another youngster Carl Shubotham committed
himself and stayed the course well - this run will have benefited him
enormously.
As for Pete Benyon - courage and commitment sometimes goes way beyond words
of explanation, but hopefully this run will have helped just a little...
For myself, standing on the side also seemed irrelevant on this occasion,
and I was well pleased with my effort. Just behind me, Danny Barker heeded
my shouts to keep going. Mark Kinch will have been surprised to finish where
he did, and is obviously still not right, but the Division One field on this
occasion was the biggest for a few years with more than 200 finishers.
Elsewhere in the UKA Cross Challenge, great performances came from Kate Holt
at the bottom of the U15 girls age group, as she finished a close second,
and Michelle Ross-Cope who steadily advanced through the field to an
excellent 10th in a packed Women's race.
