Despite yet more athletes missing due to injuries and illness the City of
Stoke AC senior men again produced a solid performance on the fast flat
course at Gloucester.
First man home Brian Cole ran a steady first and second lap but really
pushed the accelerator down on the last lap to gain an excellent top 40
place. Not far behind Pete Benyon showed that his form is definitely on the
up again, and Gavin Walters might have beaten them both except for a bad
dose of stitch on the 2nd lap. Junior Carl Shubotham continues to quietly
improve in each race.
Mark Kinch also seems to have recovered from a recent cold and moved through
the field very strongly on the last lap. 6th counter on this occasion was
Danny Barker with one of his best runs so far. Danny like Carl is benefiting
from consistent training under coach Steve Shubotham and is also showing
improvement in every race now. Steve Bazell is unfortunately still suffering
from the after-effects of a cold, but he'll be back in a couple more weeks.
Liam Jones has just come back from quite a long time off, so actually had a
good run in this strongest of cross country leagues. He now has a benchmark
for improvement in the next couple of months. Last man in this time was
Adrian Thiemicke, again making absolutely sure that we completed a team.
This team result means that we are in a relatively safe 10th spot overall,
and with a strong group of athletes still to run we should go a lot better
in the last 2 races.
