16-17 Sept 2006 ENGLISH SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS - DERBY

Great end-of season performances from City of Stoke Multi-events squad

Chelsea Cooper, the current AAA U17 Women’s Combined Events champion showed real courage to gain a bronze medal after a disastrous start in the English Schools combined events Intermediate girls championship. On her 1st event, the 80m Hurdles, Chelsea felt a sharp pain in her right knee just as the starter’s gun went. Chelsea carried on to finish 3rd in her heat, but in a time well below her normal high standard. After this it was always going to be an uphill struggle. The 2nd event, the High Jump saw her slump to 17th place overall after only clearing 1.48m, well below a normal height of 1.60m. She then got herself back together in the 3rd event with a good Shot Put of 8.91m bringing her back up to 12th overall. A very painful first day was ended by an strong 200m in 25.17 which brought Chelsea back up to 3rd place.

On the second day, Chelsea was in considerable pain but still managed a 5.49m long jump, although this was again below her normal distance. Chelsea’s best event was to come in the Javelin where she threw a new club record of 33.97m, well ahead of her rivals, which brought her up to 2nd place behind leader Meghan Beesley. This left Chelsea requiring a good run in the 800m, but her luck had run out and the knee was now extremely painful. She collapsed over the line, having given everything. In the circumstances 3rd place overall was a fantastic effort, and gave her qualification for another England vest in an International match in Glasgow in December, where hopefully she will have recovered and will make amends for her disappointment on this occasion.

Alice Lennox also performed extremely well in the same age-group and in fact led the event after 2 events following an excellent 1.63m High Jump. Alice remained in 4th until the final event when she was narrowly pushed back into 6th overall.

In the younger Junior Girls age-group Jess Devaney and Charlotte James also pushed each other all the way through the competition to finish 7th and 9th respectively.

The club is very lucky to have this squad of extremely talented athletes, coached by some of the best coaches in the UK in Jim Talbot and Tony williams - let us hope they can keep pushing each other to new heights (and distances / times!) over the next few years.
