Once again a small number of
athletes travelled to Haringey in an attempt to retain a position for the
senior squad in the National league. On
a blisteringly hot day and after a long journey the Stoke athletes battled
hard to cover the required number of events. Two
personal bests were recorded Emma Jackson in the 400m clocking 56.2 seconds
and Clare Booker in the 800m with a time of 2:17.3.
Victoria Consterdine and Michelle Cope scored Stoke AC's only wins of
the day in the B shot put and 3000m respectively.
Michelle ran superbly in the 3000m to finish 200m clear of Enfield
& Haringey's Liz Muggeridge reversing the finishing positions from the
first meeting. One hour and twenty
minutes later Michelle competed in the 1500m, battling hard for 3rd
place just 5 seconds behind the winner, two fine performances in such hot
conditions.
City of Stoke were also thrown a lifeline when Radley ladies failed to field
enough athletes to complete the required number of events.
With Border already withdrawn from the league this leaves Stoke with
an opportunity to stay in the National league for another year providing
they cover the required number of events at the final meeting in August.
This has to be a priority to allow the club to provide competition
for our up and coming U17 athletes.
Next meeting is on the August 6th at Abingdon
