Report by Andy Prophett
A heavily depleted Stoke squad battled hard for every point on a hot day on
the south coast. Under
difficult circumstances a 7th place finish on the day ahead of
rivals Rugby was a good result, as the team was without any of its jumps or
multi-events squad. Those
present did their best to cover the events and their effort and
determination should be commended.
The Shot was the club’s most successful event of the day with veteran
Morris Fox finishing in second place with a put of 15.50m, an improvement of
67cm on his winning distance from the opening fixture.
In the B event Greg Nixon claimed the team’s only win of the day. Nixon’s
12.86m effort was 27cm further than he managed when winning the B event at
the last match. Further success in
the throws came in the Discus, where Greg Nixon and Martin Bartholomew
continued their rivalry. With
Nixon having pipped Bartholomew by just 21cm in last month’s contest, it
was the turn of first year junior Bartholomew to come out on top on this
occasion. Again the difference between the two was just 21cm.
Bartholomew’s 41.78m was an agonising 1cm short of his personal
best and claimed 3rd spot in the A event, whilst Nixon’s 41.57m
placed him 2nd in the B competition.
On the track it was the 800m that generated the team’s best points return
with Andy Prophett recording a season’s best of 1:54.4 whilst finishing 4th
in the A race. In the B string
Carl Shubotham improved his personal best for the second time in 5 days as
he claimed second place in a time of 1:55.5.
Steeplechasers Gavin Walters and Steve Bazell also scored well,
finishing 4th A and 3rd B respectively.
In the sprints, new signings Steve Butterworth and Richard Black
helped to strengthen the team, with Butterworth taking 4th place
in the A 100m whilst Richard Porter recorded a pb in the 400m.
The next fixture on July 7th at Abingdon will be crucial if the
team is to claw their way up the league.
