Report by Tom Gayle
The
club's top female sprinters, the Keith Fradley coached duo of Ashlee Nelson
and Jazmine Rowe were in fine form at the Bedford International Games.
In
the women’s 100m C race, last year’s National Champion Laura Turner
(Harrow A.C) took victory in 11.49. She was chased all the way though by
16-year-old Nelson who was the first of three fellow teenagers to crack the
UKA qualifying
standard of 11.80 seconds for the European Junior Championships in Hengelo,
Netherlands, on 19-22 July.
Despite running into a slight headwind Nelson surpassed her previous
personal best of 11.58 by stopping the clock at 11.56, which unsurprisingly
was a new club U17 record.
She was quickly followed home by her challengers for a spot on the plane to
Hengelo as Hayley Jones (Wigan and District) was third in 11.62, and Ashia
Philip (Newham and Essex Beagles), who headed Nelson in last years U17
national rankings, fifth in 11.70.
Multiple English Schools Champion Rowe also produced two encouraging
performances. After only returning back to training in April, Rowe is
getting better and better with each race she encounters. Faced with strong
headwinds the 17 year old clocked season’s best performances of 12.42 for
the shorter sprint, and later backed it up with 24.7 over the 200m. Rowe is
hoping to also book a place on the European Junior team this summer, and as
the season goes on her chances are looking more and more likely.
