After successfully retaining the Midlands North
title, Stoke were once again in the ‘A’ cup final hoping to improve on
last years 2nd place.
It soon became obvious that Worcester and Rugby were the teams to beat.
Despite a great team performance with our biggest ever points tally Stoke
had to settle for 2nd place behind Worcester. Tony Leigh was once
more in dominant form comfortably winning all three of his sprint races. He
also set new records in the M35 100m and 400m sprints.
Mike Warrilow also sprinted well for 2nd in the M50 100m. He
followed this with a great 2nd place in the M50 Triple Jump.
Richard Barrington is a versatile M60 competitor. On a very demanding day,
he was 3rd in the 400m, 4th in the 200m, 5th
in the shot and capped it with 1st in the Triple Jump.
Dick Kneill was not quite fully fit but ran well for 6th place in
the M60 800m.
Nigel Gardner was 3rd in his first ever Pole Vault competition
and also came 3rd in the M35 High Jump.
Alan Burt ran outside of his age group but still finished 5th in
a very competitive M35 800m. In the Long Jump he suffered from 2 ‘no
jumps’ and again finished 5th.
Adrian Thiemicke earned valuable points with 5th in the M35 3000m
and 4th in the M40 1500m.
Chris Bourne also ‘doubled up’ with his races. He finished 5th
in both the M50 3000m and 1500m.
Dave Hindley competed well in the M60 3000m finishing in 5th
position.
It was good to see John Sinclair back on the track again and he earned
valuable points with 5th position in the M50 400m.
Clive Howell was on top form again comfortably winning the M50 Hammer and
followed this with 3rd in the M50 Shot.
Brian Eggleton has developed into a competitive race walker throughout the
season and he finished 2nd in the M40 event. He followed this
with 5th in the M60 High Jump.
Phil Bailey was 3rd in the M50 2k walk but then showed he is a
decent thrower with 3rd place in the M50 Discus.
Morris Fox is also a very competitive thrower. He performed exceptionally
well for 2nd in the M40 Discus and Javelin competitions.
It is always good to finish with a win. The 4 x 100m relay was for mixed age
groups. Nigel Gardner got the team into a good position on the first leg
handing over to Mike Warrilow. Stoke were in 3rd position on the
next changeover to Richard Barrington who closed the gap handing over the
baton to Tony Leigh. Tony had a few metres to make up on the leaders but as
we have seen many times this season he cruised home for another memorable
win.
To cap a fine season Tony Leigh was presented with the Midlands North
Athlete of the Year.
This was an excellent all-round team performance and 2nd place
against a very strong Worcester team was quite an achievement.
