23rd Sept 2007 MIDLANDS YOUNG ATHLETES ROAD RELAYS - SUTTON PARK

A brilliant turn-out of 18 lads from George Cooper's squad saw a Gold Medal winning performance from the U13 boys and a Bronze from the U15 boys. The U17 men were not far off a medal in 5th place either, and the B teams in each age group also showed that there is plenty of depth in the squad.

The U13 boys were given a fabulous start by Dave Sheldon whose 13.58 clocking was the 2nd fastest U13 leg of the day. From then on they were never headed, and Lindon Evans (who has another year to go in this age-group) and Kris Washington both gave great performances to bring home the gold.

The U13 boys B team in 7th saw strong debuts from 2 new-comers to the squad in Bradley Sentence and Kieren Mayer. They sandwiched the more experienced (but even younger!) Greg Smalley who is rapidly returning to better form after a relatively low key summer.

The second of the day's medals came in the U15 boys. Tom Guy has had injury problems over the last couple of months, but a typically gritty performance bought the U15 track-star home in 6th place overall. Mike Harding picked himself up well after an injury prevented him from finishing the previous week's Uttoxeter Cross Country to keep the team well inside the top 10. Then Nathan Ainsworth showed that he may be a factor over the cross country this winter with a brilliant last leg of 13.27 (8th fastest of the day) to bring home the team in an excellent Bronze medal placing.

The U15 boys B team may only have finished 17th but the rapidly improving Luke Kinch ran very well, as did the more experienced Joe Broome. This was Danny Poole's first ever race for the club and there is no doubt that he will run much faster if he sticks at it.

The U17 men produced their best performances for some time. All of the lads have had the potential for some time, and now they are starting to believe it. All can still go much faster, and there is no doubt that this group can win medals in the near future. Dave Clark started strongly with 10th, and then an excellent 13.00 leg from Josh Kinch (the 10th fastest of the day) brought the team up to 4th. Josh Berrisford hung on really well to finish only 22 seconds away from a medal.

The U17 men's B team also performed well to finish just outside the top 10. Rob Cook showed that his endurance is now starting to improve, and Martyn Cooke and Jake Hart had solid runs which indicate that the club's depth in this age-group is not bad either.
