Outstanding performances from Emma Ward and Helen Capper in the 1500m were
the highlight of the day for Stoke at Coventry.
Emma continues to make progress back to her best with a win in the A
string 800m and 1500m. In the 800m she was in a class of her own in crossing the
line in a time of 2:08.2, 8 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. A
couple of hours later she was
back on the track for the 1500m where she ran a finely judged race to out
sprint Carlotte Wickham of Gateshead in the home straight. Helen Capper also
ran a superb race to win the B string 1500m shattering her personal best by
9 seconds in 4:41.9. Emma
Jackson stepped down in distance ahead of her major competition the,
European U20 Championships taking 2nd place in the A string 400m
and equalling her personal best set in 2006 of 56.2.
Stoke finished in 8th place which means relegation from the UKWL
after a period of 15 years. It is difficult at the moment to see how Stoke can return to
the National League in the short to medium term with no athletes to contest
the hurdles, pole vault, triple jump, long jump and inconsistent attendance
from sprinters. The small
number of athletes who do turn up at every meeting work very hard for their
club covering as many events as possible.
It is clear that there is much to do to redress the serious situation
we finds ourselves in and in my opinion this could take 5 to 10 years.
