9th June 2007 STAFFORDSHIRE SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Report by Tom Gayle

Many of the clubs young athletes were in action at the County Schools Championships.

The event provides a pivotal opportunity for young athletes to impress their respective county team selectors as the top two in each event secure themselves a county representatives vest at the Masons trophy event the following weekend, with the ultimate aim being a place on the county team for this year’s English Schools Track and Field Championships which will be held at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on July 13-14.

The main highlights for the club were as follows:

Junior Boys

Stoke AC athletes shone particularly well in the field in this age group.

Najee Fox was the leading performer, as he broke through the forty-metre barrier for the first time with a new personal best of 40.02. The throw moved Fox up to sixth of the national rankings for the event this year.

Fellow training partners Tom Darlington and Nathan Bromley were also in personal best form. After Darlington had finished runner up to Fox in the discus both he and Bromley set personal bests as they took the top two positions in the shot with throws of 10.82 and 10.67 respectively.

Further success was provided by one of the clubs newest recruits, Aqeel Karim, in the javelin. Despite only joining the club this summer he has come on leaps and bounds under the guidance of Brain Eggleton. Here he smashed his personal best by over three metres to take second with a throw of 40.17 and secure himself a Staffordshire vest for the Masons trophy.

On the track the club secured three gold medals. Deo Milandu dipped under 12 seconds for the first time as following a close battle P Walting resulting in the pair clocking the same time of 11.8. Tom Guy continued his unbeaten streak over 1500m this season as he comfortably took the title. Rio Bailey also struck Gold, surprisingly though in the 80m hurdles. Bailey, most commonly know for his exploits in the sand pit set a new personal best of 13.1 to secure victory.

Junior Girls

Star of the show in this age group was Kate Holt. Following a dominant display the Alan Morris coached athlete came with a tenth of her personal best, and moved herself up to second on the current national rankings with a time of 4.34.3. Furthermore Holt erased training partner Emma Ward’s name from the record books as her performance broke the Championship Best Performance set back in 1996.

In the field, Jazmin Sawyers continues to raise the bar, quiet literally in the high jump as she added to her earlier victory in the 75m hurdles. For the second successive weekend she improved her personal best as she took victory with a leap of 1.68. This clearance now moves her up to third on the national rankings. Additional success came in the javelin as Jessica Smith continued her destruction of the club record. Yet again she further improved the mark, this time launching it out to 26.27.

Intermediate Boys

Brad Garside helped himself to two county school titles. First up, he honed his flat speed by wrapping up the 100m crown with a new personal best of 11.5. Later he returned to his main event the hurdles. Undeterred by the lack of opposition he effortless sped to his second win and personal best of the day, impressively leaving his nearest rival over 3 seconds, and almost two clear flights of hurdles adrift.

Liam Tracey, who missed the whole of last years campaign with injury, collected the 400m crown with a mature and competent display. The Chris Brackstone coached athlete was a class apart as he took victory in 52.3.

Joe Harding, who made his a winning debut for the club in the high jump a week before at Cannock in the National Young Athletes league with a leap of 1.78 was just shy of that mark this time as he cleared the same height as C Barton (1.76), but unfortunately lost out on count back.

Ben Williams and Rob Dean provided the most domineering performances of the weekend. Williams edged ever closer to the 14 metre mark as he took victory in triple jump with a leap of 13.96, leaving team mate Julian Weatherall just under a metre and a half adrift. Weatherall was able to even the score in the long jump though as it was Williams’s turn to play second fiddle as he took victory with a new personal best of 6.08.

Dean, who is in his first season of the new weight in the hammer was just shy of the 50 metre mark with a throw of 49.68. This performance provided the youngster with a winning margin of an astonishing 22 metres.

Intermediate Girls

The field was a highly successfully stomping ground for the club in this age group. Jade Weston continues to make winning look easy as she notched up her victory of the season. Her throw of 11.54 in the shot moved her up to fourth of the current u.k rankings. Fellow training partner Jade Moore also contained her winning form in the discus. A winning throw of 32.91 earned Moore her fourth consecutive victory her 2007 campaign.

Alice Lennox showed she is class act in both the horizontal and vertical jumps. Although Lennox now lies second on the national rankings in the long jump with a leap of 5.67, she only required 5.24 to take the title here. Further success came in the high jump as she set a new personal best of 1.66 to scoop victory.

Charlotte James concluded the field success in the Javelin. James was the only competitor to breach 30 metres in the event with a winning throw of 31.33.

On the track two members of Alan Morris squad provided the two impressive victories. First up Kate Anderson, who is more commonly known for her exploits over 800m stepped down to the 300m. She demonstrated that she is not short of speed as she secured victory with a time of 41.5.

Meanwhile Heather Holt continues to chop away at her 1500m personal best. For the fourth time this season she revised her life time best, this time slicing off a further 3 seconds on route to victory.
