18-19 August 2007 ENGLAND ATHLETICS U15 & U17 COMBINED EVENTS - NORTHWOOD

Report by Tom Gayle

Far from favourable conditions greeted the cream of UK’s multi skilled athletes for the National Combined events championships. Several City of Stoke AC athletes were on show at the event with the clubs main highlight saw Alice Lennox take the U17 women’s Heptathlon title.

Heading into the event Lennox stood at the top of the UK ranking thus was considered a strong favourite for the event. Combined events championships though are renown for high drama as one poor event can ruin an athlete’s whole competition. Lennox though handled the pressure of being favourite with admirable maturity as despite winds reaching up to 7.4 metres per second on day one, very wet conditions on day two, the Anthony Brannan coached athlete reeled off a solid series of performances despite the conditions to take victory. Her winning score of 4601 was amazingly given the conditions just 21 points shy of her lifetime best, and left her nearest rival just under 500 points adrift.

Other highlights

·     Charlotte James was just outside the medals in the U17 women’s heptathlon but with another year still to go in this age group it was a highly encouraging performance which will she will not doubt under the watchful eye of coach Jim Talbot improve on next year.

·     Deo Milandu who is part of Chris Brackstone’s sprint training group at the club showed that he may have a future in the combined events as despite only training for sprint events he remarkably placed 7th in the U15 boys pentathlon
