Going into the final league meeting, a top
3 finish would be enough to retain the Northern Division Championship.
Once again, our sprinters were on top form with Tony Leigh and Paul Williams
comfortably winning their 200m races. Tony followed this with a win in the
M35 Long Jump and Paul 2nd position in the M40 Shot Putt
competition.
Peter Wainwright was 5th in the M50 200m, 3rd in the
Pole Vault and won the M50 Javelin competition.
Our Race Walkers were in fine form with Phil Bailey winning the M50 race and
Brian Eggleton gaining 3rd place in the M40 competition.
Nigel Gardner earned valuable points with 4th place in the M35
800m. Dick Kneill made a welcome return to the track and 4th in
the M60 competition. Adrian Thiemicke doubled up for the M40A 800m and 3000m
with 4th and 3rd places respectively. Alan Burt
competed well for 2nd place in the M40B 3000m race and Chris
Bourne ran well for 3rd place in the M50 event. Dave Hindley
showed his versatility with 5th position in the M60 Long Jump.
The competition on the night was extremely close with Stoke and Royal Sutton
Coldfield level on points with the 4 x 100m relay still to come. Nigel
Gardner ran a good 1st leg handing the baton to Paul Williams
with Stoke in 3rd place. Paul powered his way down the back
straight almost catching Royal Sutton Coldfield who were now in the lead.
Adrian Thiemicke ran an excellent 3rd leg handing the baton to
Tony Leigh who cruised home for a memorable Stoke win. With RSC finishing 2nd,
the winning margin on the night was just 1 point. This was our 4th
straight win of the season and once again we retained the Midlands Northern
Division Title.
