2 Sept 2007 NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE FINAL - BIRMINGHAM

Stoke AC yet again showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in U17 National team competition.

Fifth place was a brilliant result for probably the smallest club in the final, and for the second year in a row included a narrow victory over Midland Champions Birchfield in the overall National standings. Team managers George Cooper and Dave Taylor should also be rightly praised for their efforts.

Led by Ashlee Nelson's stunning sprint double which saw her break the meeting records for both the 100m and 200m, there were many other outstanding performances from the Stoke youngsters. Many athletes doubled or tripled up, some at very short notice, and there were many other wins and top 3 placings.

In the U17 women Kate Anderson won the 800m and Heather Holt the 1500m, with Kate also gaining a bronze medal in the 300m. In the 3000m Francesca Champ ran an excellent race but just missed out on a medal in the final straight.

Stoke's superb throws pairing of Jade Weston and Jade Moore dominated the U17 shot and discus. Weston took the shot title, with Moore second in the B competition, and then Moore won the discus with Weston also taking the B event. Both girls also competed strongly in the hammer.

UK U17 Heptathlon champion Alice Lennox and fellow multi-eventer Chelsea Cooper (who is just returning from injury) spread their talents to gain excellent points in a number of events. Alice finished second in the long jump and third in an extremely strong 80m hurdles race, whilst Chelsea got 2 silvers in the 100m and 200m sprint B events and then topped it off with a win in the B long jump. Both then also competed in the U17 4x100m relay squad that took 3rd place. Another of the club's multi-event squad Charlotte James also competed strongly in 3 events.

The U15 multi-eventers Jazmine Sawyers and Katie Gardner racked up a stack of points. Sawyers won the 80m hurdles, with Gardner second in the B event. Gardner turned the tables to finish second in the long jump, whilst Sawyers won the B. Sawyers also finished second in the high jump after an excellent competition with the Country's top U15 multi-eventer who set a new League record. Finally Gardner also picked up a bronze in the javelin. Elsewhere in the U15 field events Mia Skingsley jumped well to gain a silver medal in the High Jump B event.

The country's top U15 middle distance runner Katie Holt dominated the 1500 with a strong victory against top class opposition. Together with sister Heather's win in the U17 event and Kate Andersons win at 800m this showed the quality in Alan Morris's well coached squad which also includes top UK 800m junior Emma Jackson.

In the U13 girls events Stoke's top performer was Lucie Farrell who just missed out on gold in the 800m. Hopefully, next year some of the other younger U13 athletes will move up a level and show what they can really do.

At U17 men's level there were a host of wins, with John Crotty's outstanding Jumps squad leading the way. Ben Williams dominated the Triple Jump with James Gardner winning the B event. In the long jump Matt Rollings won, with Gardner taking another gold in the B event. Rollings also took third in the high jump with Joe Harding taking a bronze in the B event. Rollings and Gardner also competed well in an extremely tough 100m.

Dave Clarke demonstrated there is also plenty of talent left in Stoke's male middle distance squad, with superbly timed breaks 800m from home to win both the 3000m and 1500m steeplechase. Showing the real commitment which is a given in George Cooper's teams, Dave also 'warmed up' with a throw in the hammer! Jake Hart who had led the 3000m until Clarke's break held on well for 3rd in the B event, whilst Martyn Cooke went one better with second in the B steeplechase. Josh Kinch held on well down the finishing straight for 2nd in the 1500m B race behind team-mate Rob Cooke who gave absolutely everything in the A race.

Mark Cooper gained a creditable silver to continue something of Stoke AC's record in the Pole Vault, and after an injury ravaged season Brad Garside finished with a bronze in the 100m Hurdles.

At U15 boys level, Najee Fox was Stoke AC's sole A event victor with a strong throw in the discus. Tom Darlington backed him up really well with second in the both the shot and discus B events. Aqeel Karim and Danny Johnson did well in the Javelin, with a bronze for Karim in the A event and gold for Johnson in the B. In his first season at the event, David Beattie also threw brilliantly to gain a bronze medal in the shot.

There was also some excellent jumping from Rio Bailey and Jake Rimmer, with Bailey setting a new PB in the long jump for 3rd (after some on the spot coaching from National event coach John Crotty, no less!), before also winning the high jump B. Rimmer finished second in the high jump A event, and third in the long jump B events.

Tom Guy showed that even two weeks off with injury cannot stop him altogether, with second in the 1500m and an excellent new PB in the 200m. Not to be outdone Rob Wilson set a new PB in finishing second in the 800m A race before suffering injury when well placed in his preferred 400m. Michael Harding and Nathan Ainsworth competed well to finish third in the 800m and 1500m B respectively.

Deo Milandu had a very busy afternoon, running brilliant new PBs in both the 100m and 200m, and collecting a bronze medal in the 100m A race. Rio Bailey was also extremely unfortunate to be disqualified after falling and getting back up again to finish during the 80m hurdles. Tom Towe finished a strong third in the Hurdles B.

At U13 boys level James Taylor found himself in second place for the first time in a 75m Hurdles event after suffering an injury during the race. This is after he had set a great new PB in the 200m when finishing second in the B event. Jake Teague with 2nd in the B Hurdles also ran well in the 200m A race and was unfortunate to be outside the medals.

Dave Sheldon's 1500m silver was a strong run in windy conditions, whilst Kris Washington was rightly proud of his 800m B event bronze. In the 800m A event Lyndon Evans was perhaps a bit disappointed with his 7th place and 2.31 clocking but he is only 10 and has another two years in this age-group!

Lastly, but certainly not least, Moynul Hussain threw an excellent shot PB, to bring home a silver medal in the A event after only a couple of months in the sport.

Although inevitably some of our top U17's will not be in this competition next year, the future looks bright for Stoke AC's talented youngsters.
