7 June 2008  MIDLAND TRACK & FIELD LEAGUE - DIVISION ONE - CHELTENHAM

This was possibly one of the best days of the year so far, with both the weather and another stunning set of results for the Stoke AC athletes playing their part. It also seemed to be higher standard match compared with the opening fixture, possibly due to the previous fixture clashing with the BUSA championships.

Having finished joint 1st in the opening match, the pressure was on to try and ensure a repeat performance. In the end it was all decided on the last event with a narrow victory for the home team Cheltenham, who I am sure made a desperate call to James Brewer to compete in the 4x400 relay.

In the end Stoke finished 2nd just 7½  points behind the home team Cheltenham.
The final scores subject to confirmation are as shown:

Overall this was another excellent set of results which has built on the opening match result and has now placed us in a very strong position. This means we need to consolidate this at the next fixture on the 7th July at Coventry and press the home advantage on the 10th August. I would like to thank everyone who competed / attended for their efforts yesterday, well done to you all.

There were many superb individual performances on the day, particularly in the field events, with a huge throw in the discus by Martin Bartholomew who I am told increased his personal best by 1m. Glenn Unsworth also improved his personal best in the hammer 5 times during the event.

In the women’s shot Jade Weston threatened the 12 metre mark on several occasions before unleashing a tremendous throw on her last attempt which measured 12.65m a personal best by some  70cm.

Whilst on the track Chelsea Cooper hurdled her way to victory and set a new personal best in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.9 seconds.

There were many other excellent individual men's results, with wins for Steve Bazell (A) and Gavin Walters (B) in the 3000m SC, Martin Bartholomew (A) and Greg Nixon (B) in the Shot Putt, Martin Bartholomew (A) and Greg Nixon (B) in the Discus and Glenn Unsworth (B) in the Hammer. Richard Porter was unable to find his PB form from the previous match, but managed to finish a creditable 2nd in the 200m.

A very strong women’s team had only 4 finishes outside of the top two positions! Morgan Brown was in scorching form with win’s in the 100m(A) & 200m (A), Chelsea Cooper with wins in the 100mH(B) and Long Jump (A),  Emma Jackson (A) and Kate Anderson in the 800m, Katie Holt (A) and Clare Booker (B) in the 1500m, Clare Booker - again - (A) in the 3000m, Alice Lennox with wins in the  100mH (A) and High Jump (A), Michelle Robbins in the Long Jump (B), Jade Weston (A) And Jade Moore (B) in the Shot Putt, Jade Weston (B) in the Discus and Olga Ketmilosi (A) in the Javelin.

Also many congratulations to youngsters Michael Harding and Cloe Green who made their debut in the senior league. They both competed in the 3000m events with Michael finishing as an A competitor in the mens race, and Cloe finishing a creditable 2nd in the women’s (B) string.

Please contact me as soon as possible with details of your availability for the next matches. stephen.shubotham@ntlworld.com

Club members and non club members - please have a look at the results to see if you can help in any way. Can you run faster, jump higher or longer, or perhaps you can throw further?

Stoke AC have club training nights at Northwood stadium on Tuesday and Thursday nights, please see Iris Morris at the club house for more details.

I hope to get some photographs of you all competing at the next match to include in the next report, subject to the weather and  time commitments. If you have any comments please let me know.
