NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RELAYS -
MANSFIELD |
|
|
The National Cross Country relays at Mansfield always give a strong
indication of how our own competitors are doing at a National level.
This year saw a much better turn-out in terms of numbers by the club, but
there were a few problems with completing teams due to last minute
withdrawals.
However in spite of the intense competition there were still some excellent
performances, particularly from the youngsters.
Lucy Holt shone again with a strong run on the first leg of an incomplete
U13 Girls team. Lindon Evans proved that he has got what it takes with a
great last leg to bring the U13 boys up to a creditable 22nd place.
The U15 girls also completed a team this year with consistent runs from all
3 competitors, with Lucie Farrell the fastest on the first leg.
The U15 boys supplied 2 teams on this occasion. Tom Guy set with off intent as
he led the field for much of the first leg, before fading in the final
stages, but Tom still ran the fastest time of a strong team. When Tom gets
the endurance he will run fast times on this course. Dave Sheldon ran
strongly too, to nudge the team into the top 10, and Jamie Krzowski
completed a good day for the A team with a finish in 13th overall. The U15
boys B team showed with their 46th place in a big field, that we do have some
strength in depth in this age group.
The U17 men were also an incomplete team, but Liam Hendricken and Joe Broome
ran well in the circumstances.
Kate Holt took the opportunity of a lack of U17 competitors to race for the
Junior Women on this occasion, and she ran really well on the last leg to
bring the team into 11th place overall, the top local team in any category
on the day. This was after excellent performances from Helen Capper and
Heather Holt, both of these making strong comebacks.
The Senior Women again were an incomplete team, but Clare Booker and Emma
Jackson will probably count this race as an excellent training session.
The Senior Men were back here for the first time in two years, and it was
great to see Tom Gayle getting back into competition again. Tom's positive
first leg was backed up by a return to racing for Steve Cooper, with novice
Dave Lee doing really well not to lose any places on the third leg, and also
a return for former top Stoke man Pete Benyon who answered my late call up
after injury to help us out on the day. It was a pity that we could not turn
out more men, but with our sights set on Birmingham League promotion it is
important not to over-race our small squad at this stage of the season.
Hopefully next year will see a stronger turn-out, and it has to be said that
it is disappointing for the area that only ourselves and Staffs Moorlands
turned out any competitors at all in this top National competition.
