10th May 2008 STAFFORDSHIRE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS - STOKE

An astonishing 15.27m Triple Jump by U17 man Ben Williams was the headline performance on a scorching day for Stoke AC athletes in the County Championships at Northwood.

Amazingly this was just one of 6 championship records set by Stoke AC youngsters. These included Jazmine Rowe in the U20 Women's 200m, Alice Lennox in the U20 Women's 100m Hurdles, Kate Holt in the U17 Women's 1500m, Martin Bartholomew in the U17 Men's Shot and Macauley Snutch in the U13 Boy's 1500m.

Other winners and medallists were as follows:

In the U15 Girls multi-talented Jazmin Sawyers restricted herself to just 1 event on this occasion as she won the 75m Hurdles.

In the U17s Kate Holt showed that she may be on for another record breaking track season in the 1500m with a time 5 seconds faster than last year.

At U20 Women's level, in addition to Jazmine Rowe's class run at 100m, another of the clubs superb multi-eventers Alice Lennox won 3 events including the 200m, High Hurdles and Javelin. In the battle of the Jades, Jade Weston had the slightly better hand on this occasion as she took both the Shot and Discus titles, whilst Jade Moore won the Hammer.

In the senior women Olga Kotmilosi took the Javelin title on her debut at this event.

At U13 boys level, the star of the show was without doubt Macauley Snutch as he wiped out a championship record set 10 years ago by no other than current National Cross Country Champion Tom Humphries! Not to be outdone his training partner, the equally talented Lindon Evans, won the 800m. Another of George Cooper's squad Gregg Smalley showed his versatility by winning the High Jump.
Other medals included silver for Brandon Millward in the Hurdles and bronze for Korey Hallett-Blanch in the 100m.

The U15 boys also saw a host of medals.
New recruit Jamie Krzowski was in great form as he took both the 200m and the 800m and a bronze in the hurdles. Not to be outdone Tom Guy won the 400m and the 1500m at a canter, whilst Brad Sentence won the High Jump and the Pole Vault. Sentence also won silver in the Long Jump. James Taylor took the Hurdles gold and a shot silver. Alex Brecker was our other winner in this age-group as he won the hammer, proving that Hammer Coach Clive Howell's input last year is still having some effect! The much improved Brecker also competed strongly at the 800m where he took the silver and in the 400m where he got bronze. Other medalists included David Sheldon who is starting to make good progress after injury as he won silver behind Guy in the 1500m, and Tom Towe who picked up two silvers in the 100m and 80m Hurdles.

In the U17 men Ben Williams produced the performance of the championships as he hopped, skipped and jumped out to 15.27m to go top of the UK U20 rankings, let alone the U17 rankings which he now leads by more than 50cm. Williams also won the Long Jump to round off a great afternoon for the John Crotty coached athlete. Rob Dean produced an excellent throw as he won the hammer and other wins came from sprinter turned multi-eventer Deo Milandu in the 100m Hurdles, Josh Barard in the Javelin, Najee Fox in the Discus and Mark Cooper in the Pole Vault. Milandu also won silver in the 100m and bronze in the Pole Vault, whilst Fox took the bronze in the shot.

At U20 level there was a first Staffordshire County gold for Rob Cook in the 800m as he set yet another personal best. Thrower Martin Bartholomew continued in cracking form as he won both the Shot in a new championship record, and the Discus, with a silver in the Hammer as a warm-up! Silver medals in this age-group came from Josh Berrisford in the 800m and and Glenn Unsworth in the Javelin. Unsworth also earned County bronzes at Hammer and Discus.

At senior level Gregg Nixon was our sole winner as he won the Hammer and the Shot, and silver in the Discus. However there were also good performances from multi-eventer James Dohnal who took silver in the Long Jump and Shot and bronze in the Discus and Richard Porter who sprinted to bronze in the 100m.

Overall this was Stoke AC's biggest turn-out and best haul of medals for quite some time, especially in the younger age-groups, and although this was tempered by a further reduction in numbers at senior level, the future continues to look bright.
