Excellent front running from the Holt sisters,
Kate and Heather, may have produced Stoke AC's only individual Gold medals
of the 2008 championships, but there were other excellent individual and
team performances.
Grace Mahoney yet again led the U13 girls home again this winter in 14th
with a good performance in the first race of the day.
The U13 boys were only 1 point away from a team victory as they were led
home by Dave Sheldon in second. Typically strong runs by Kris Washington and
Lyndon Evans supported Sheldon's effort as the rest of George Coopers squad
completed the course in record numbers.
Kate Holt strode to to yet another comprehensive victory in the U15 girls
race as she continued her preparations for the big races to come. In 4th
place Sam Bailey was just outside a medal.
The U15 boys saw a first Stoke AC team victory of the afternoon as Nathan
Ainsworth produced another plucky finish to grab second. Not far behind Tom
Guy and a revitalised Michael Harding had a real battle which Guy just won
with a typical sprint finish.
The U17 women's race was won by Heather Holt with another front running
performance, and in conjunction with great runs from Clare Capper and Chloe
Green, the girls brought home the club's second team Gold of the afternoon.
Josh Berrisford was our strongest performer in the U17 men as he finished
8th, a definite improvement on last year.
The senior women's race saw Clare Booker and a returning Sophie Allcock
provide a solid Stoke presence.
In the senior men Steve Bazell was our sole representative this year, and
Steve performed well up to recent form as he finished 10th.
Hopefully in terms of numbers this is as low as our senior representation
will go, but in some defence we have had a horrendous injury and illness
list this year. Just watching this race we had Tom Gayle, Carl Shubotham,
Danny Barker, myself (all injured) and Andy Allen (ill) - not a bad team
when all fully fit!
