MIDLANDS
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - MANSFIELD |

|
The
Midland championships saw some outstanding performances for the middle
distance girls on Saturday. The course, what can only be described as a
‘mud slide’, didn’t hinder their performances.
In the senior women’s race Emma Jackson flew through the mud to cross the
line in 7th place. Jackson settled in with the leading pack of
strong athletes for the first part of the race. She then showed
determination in the latter stages to ensure she claimed top ten placing.
Clare Booker also had a great run on the hilly course. After struggling
through previous races, she pulled out the stops finishing in 46th
place.
Heather Holt clinched 5th spot in the under 20 competition, stopping the
clock in 20:15. Meanwhile Sister Katie Holt claimed silver in the individual
medals. Despite feeling unwell, she battled through to complete the race in
19.01.
Lucy Holt followed in her sister’s footsteps of gaining a top ten placing.
Holt achieved 6th place in the under 13’s race, establishing
her ever increasing confidence. Team mates Natasha Clowes, Sarah Griffiths
and Jessica Heath also ran well which resorted in a 6th team
placing.
Finally, in the under fifteens race, Lucy Hayes brought her team home
crossing the line in 48th place. After struggling with several
illnesses over the winter, Hayes indicated that her form is beginning to
show.
Overall, each of the girls raced to the best of their ability and should all
be proud of where they finished!!
Heather Holt
U13 Ashley Wyatt was the top boys' performer in finishing 7th, and I am sure
that the other lads will see his excellent run as something they should be
aiming for too. Macauley Snutch also ran well in this age-group and the
squad generally performed really well in very tough competition. In the U15s
Dave Sheldon ran a great race for a top 30 finish, and Callum Hulme was
close behind with a storming run. All 6 Stoke runners in this age-group
finished within a minute of Sheldon, and were unlucky not to finish much
higher up the team standings.
Nathan Ainsworth and Mike Harding shone for the U17 men with their best runs
of the winter so far, and with great support from Joe Broome and Danny Poole
it was also good to see this age-group at Stoke AC
complete a team in 7th.
Our senior men's entry was intentionally limited to maximise our meagre
resources for the Birmingham Cross Country League promotion campaign, but Seb Duffy and Tom Gayle ran strongly as they both finished inside the top 30.
