28 June 2009 NEWCASTLE 4 x 1 MILE RELAYS

Many thanks to Newcastle AC for a interesting and competitive little event where Stoke AC's youngsters
again turned out in good numbers.

Before the start there was a one minute silence to mark the death of Staffordshire Moorlands' legendary distance runner Roy Fowler, earlier the same day. Roy always strongly encouraged all runners of whatever club to give their best effort, and I amongst many, many others, will miss his shouts of support. Our condolences go to his family, friends and his club.

Our top team on the day was actually made up entirely of U17s, and they ran strongly throughout for 2nd overall behind a great performance by a team of slightly older Staffordshire Moorlands' lads. The U15 boys also performed to expectations as they dominated their age-group. A surprise entry was a team of Stoke AC girls, none over 15, who ran brilliantly and came home 2nd ladies team overall!

Fastest performer for Stoke AC was U17 Michael Harding who is continuing his steady improvement this year as he finished in 4.44, only a few seconds down on the best performances of the day. 5 minutes later Mike ran 5.03 on another leg for the 3rd placed 'E' team, showing that his endurance is also coming on.

Rob Cook was the fastest of the senior men in an excellent 4.55 as several of this very inexperienced squad showed startling improvements on previous performances. It was also great to see Gavin Walters out again in a Stoke vest. Recovering from a broken leg and 'buying a house', as well as changing job - all at the same time - Gavin amazed by still running 5.30. Gavin - please - a couple of runs a week and it will be much easier!

Dave Sheldon was easily the fastest of the U15 boys overall as he cruised round in 5.07. Korey Hallett-Blanch also ran very well for 3rd fastest U15 overall. A mention must be made of U13s Liam Baggeley and Macauley Snutch who zipped round in 5.20 and 5.30 respectively.

For the ladies' team, youngsters Melissa Harding, Chloe and Jade Heath ran brilliantly before a fantastic 5.57 run from one of the most improved girls at the club, Jessica Griffiths. This was enough to secure 2nd ladies place overall. Just think girls, another 3 years or more, and you can have a bottle of wine as a prize!
