The second meeting of the Midland Track and Field League took place on Sunday 04 June at a cool and windy Aldersley Stadium Wolverhampton.
Star performer on the day was Olympian Ashleigh Nelson in the 400m. Clocking an impressive 52.9 seconds for her first outing in this event for two years Ashleigh was, as could be expected, well clear of the rest of the opposition in the A race. The result was a personal best, Midland league record, division 2 record and improved the club record by over 2 seconds. Afterwards Ashleigh said, “I’m pretty pleased with that considering we only made the decision to switch to the event a few weeks ago. Training to this point has been based on 100m training, but I still have a good background as I did lots of work over 300m as a youngster when I was at the club working with Keith Fradley.” Note to all sprint coaches and athletes, speed is king, a statement I attribute to the late John Bailey who coached Martin Briggs to Olympic status.
This was the outstanding performance however there was another superb performance which should be recognised here. Rhianne Moore-Martin continued her excellent season so far with yet another personal best and improvement to the club senior record in the hammer. Rhianne launched the 4kg lump out to an impressive 41.88m improving both her PB and the senior club record by 2 metres.
There were also personal bests for Natasha Futter TJ(10.15m), Casey Maddox 1500m(4:03.3), Seamus Derbyshire 400m (50.3), Sha Jannally 800m (2:00.5), if I’ve missed anyone please let me know.
Despite these and many more outstanding contributions to the team we could manage no better than 4th on the day with the women finishing 1st and the men 5th. This leaves us in the relegation zone in 5th place and free falling into division 3, which would be the lowest we have been in 30 years.
Thank you to all athletes who competed hard to try and maintain the proud tradition of the club and to all volunteers who travelled to ensure we have the valuable points from their contribution.
Next meeting is Saturday 15 July at Cheltenham.
